Follow-up Actions from Meetings with Students

Dear Students,

Over the last several weeks, your teachers have been meeting with over a thousand students at many gatherings about the recent social unrest. The senior management team and I have begun to participate in these sessions.  You have given us some very good suggestions. This email is to let you know what follow-up actions arising from your suggestions are now being undertaken.

I would like to pledge again that all students who want to join these gatherings will be able to do so. We will do everything possible to have the chance to listen to you. We hope that these sessions have provided a calming effect on campus at this difficult time. So please do sign up for these sessions if you have not already done so.

Actions Being Undertaken

Campus security

With continued confrontation and violence in the community, many of you are concerned with your personal safety while on campus. Stepping up security arrangements with more vigilant monitoring will provide a safe environment for all and help put your minds at ease. To this end, we will:

1. Extend the rapid response team to include student representatives to enhance communication on security issues, and alert each other of any potential risks on campus such as the intrusion of outsiders;
2. Get external experts to conduct a campus security audit as soon as possible with input from students and colleagues to identify any security gaps and areas for enhancement;
3. Strengthen security in areas where students have expressed concern and in critical spots; and
4. Step up campus monitoring by installing additional CCTV cameras at critical locations.

Student support

1. Class arrangements: traffic disruption may affect your class attendance. Teachers will make suitable arrangements and exercise greater flexibility as far as possible.
2. Programme-specific needs: Deans, Heads and teachers have gathered concerns specific to certain academic programmes and will take necessary measures to support your learning.

Police entry into campus

The campus comes under the management of HKBU. The Police can enter the campus only if they are duly authorised and with strong justification, such as the possession of a search warrant, in which case University staff will accompany them. The University security personnel are under instructions to discharge their duty based on this principle. We have also been in touch with the Police on HKBU-specific security issues to foster understanding, and will continue to do so.

The senior management team and I look forward to meeting you in one of these sessions. We will give you timely updates on our follow-up actions arising from these meetings with you. With concerted efforts, we will together build a safe and supportive environment for all to learn and thrive.

Yours sincerely,
