Dear Graduands, Students, Parents, and Colleagues,
Cancellation of Commencement Ceremonies
Due to grave concern about the safety of our graduating students and their parents and other guests, the University Management has decided to cancel all the commencement ceremonies originally scheduled for November 14-18.
Commencement is one of the most important events in our academic calendar and a most memorable occasion for our graduating students to join their parents and teachers in marking the proud harvest of their years of hard work and achievement. The decision to cancel it was therefore not taken lightly. It was made with a heavy heart after a thorough risk assessment that took all relevant factors into account, including protestors throwing bulky objects from the BU Bridge onto Junction Road right outside our main campus and entering the campus to vandalise our facilities.
In place of the commencement ceremonies, the Academic Registry will issue formal notifications to all graduands that would serve as the completion of formalities for degree conferment and would also contact individual graduands on the issuance / collection of academic certificates in a way that would be most convenient to the graduands.
This is a challenging time for all of us. We are deeply saddened to see the ongoing political turmoil and its tremendous impact on our community. I would like to appeal to all members of the HKBU community to stay away from harm’s way and violence. I call on our graduands, as contributing members of the community, to demonstrate to the whole of Hong Kong that we are capable of resolving all problems through imaginative, rational and peaceful means.
